Eternal God, the heaven of heavens cannot contain you, much less the walls of temples made with hands. Graciously receive our thanks for this place, and accept the work of our hands, offered to your honor and glory. For the Church universal, of which these visible buildings are the symbol, We thank you, Lord. For your presence whenever two or three have gathered together in your Name, We thank you, Lord. For this place where we may be still and know that you are God, We thank you, Lord. For making us your children by adoption and grace, and refreshing us day by day with the bread of life. We thank you, Lord. For the knowledge of your will and the grace to perform it, We thank you, Lord. For the fulfilling of our desires and petitions as you see best for us, We thank you, Lord. For the pardon of our sins, which restores us to the company of your faithful people, We thank you, Lord. For the blessing of our vows and the crowning of our years with your goodness, We thank you, Lord. For the faith of those who have gone before us and for our encouragement by their perseverance, We thank you, Lord. For the fellowship of St. Mark, our patron, and of all your Saints, We thank you, Lord. Bless this work we are about to do, O Lord, for yours is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, the majesty, for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. Amen. All present recited the Litany of Thanksgiving. The Agenda was presented and adopted. Betty Evans was appointed Secretary for the meeting. The Tellers are those rotating off the Vestry. They are: Bert Williams, Chuck Riffee, Bob Rodak, and Gail Byrd. The Minutes of the 2005 Annual Meeting were presented and approved. Father Paul presented his Final Annual Address .He first thanked his staff .He recognized Sue Miles, our Sexton and a great helper for Christ s Kitchen He then announced that a $4000 check had been received from V-100, given by the Trans Siberian Orchestra as a gift to Christ s Kitchen. Attorney, Harvey Peyton made the gift $5000. Father Paul praised the job Mary McCoy does with the Kitchen and noted that she genuinely loves the people who come to Christ s Kitchen. He also noted that Erica Bonnett, our new director for the Food Pantry, is doing a great job. Father Paul also thanked Donna Taylor, his indispensable Secretary for her super job.and Kristi Evans, Organist and Choirmaster for the beautiful music. It was suggested that the parish help make a reality of Donna Taylor s desire to take her daughters to visit her native land, Australia. Father Paul read the names of those who were lost to us by death in the past year. They were: Bill Keene, Winnie Dunlap, Maxine Linville, Betty Sampson and Irene Sweeney. In the past year he has Baptized two new members, Chris Smith and Yinghao Long. Since the last annual meeting, we have started a new curriculum in the Sunday school, called Godly Play. A Drug Task Force has been established in St. Albans in response to drug related murders in the area. Father Paul bid the congregation a fond farewell and said that he felt God was calling him into retirement and calling him to return to Massachusetts. He will become the Priest in Charge of St. Peter s Church in Salem, Massachusetts. He also said that he did not know how to say good-bye to us as his time here has been eleven of the best years of his life. He reminded us that we are here because of our churchmanship. Our loyalty is to Jesus and not to a rector. He challenged us to continue our good churchmanship and to remember that there are no passengers, only crew on the Ship of the Church. This concluded his report. The next order of business was Vestry elections .Four new members will be elected to three year terms .The following people were nominated: Steve Hanley, John Bowyer, Kristi Evans, Ron Barton, Paul Taylor, Rusty Hash, Tom Tompkins and Gina Griffith. The Tellers distributed the ballots and collected them, then retired to tally the votes. The Chair then called for nominations for one delegate to the Episcopal Convention and one alternate. Those nominated were: Rebecca Rodak, Bob Rodak and Heather Gill. Hollie Mitchell was also nominated, but declined. The delegate and the alternate will be elected by plurality. Again the ballots were distributed, collected and the Tellers returned to the counting. Bruce Moss then gave the Senior Warden s Report. Bruce said it was a privilege to be Senior Warden and thanked the Vestry Members for their service. He also expressed thanks to Ron Barton, Steve Hanley and Sue Moss, the Trustees. Bruce stated that many things had been accomplished in the past year and noted that Christ s Kitchen was feeding more people. At one point it had been necessary to ask for increased giving and that happened. Another estate gift, designated for use in outreach, has been given by someone outside St. Mark s. It will likely be dispersed in January. Bruce explained the search process that we will use to replace Father Paul. He had lunch with the Bishop recently to discuss the process. We will hire an interim priest. The last time we were searching for a new priest, we held several social events so the congregation could meet the candidates. We will likely do that again. Members of the Vestry and the Search Committee, when it is formed, can answer any questions you may have about the process. Bruce also reminded us that due to our Faith Budget, we have no commitment cards to sign. It is what is in your heart that dictates what you give. David Hurlbut does a great job of keeping us apprised of where we are, financially. Bruce noted that God gives 100% and only asks 10% in return. Bruce thanked everyone for their support of St. Mark s. This concluded his report. The Tellers returned with the results of the Vestry Election. Steve Hanley, Tom Tompkins, and Paul Taylor were elected. There was a tie vote between Ron Barton and Rusty Hash so a run-off election was necessary. Ballots were distributed, collected and the Tellers withdrew to count the votes. David Hurlbut, Treasurer, presented the Guideline for 2007. The Finance Committee met ten days ago to crunch the numbers. They estimated the outlay for November and December. They projected the spending for 2007. It was noted that the new service contract on the heating/cooling system has resulted in lower utility bills which have almost paid for the contract. David noted that we still need to shave expenses where it is possible. Once the reimbursements from Christ s Kitchen and the Food Pantry are collected, we will be able to wipe out about $10,000 of a deficit of nearly $18,000. It was moved and seconded that we accept David s report and approve the Guideline for 2007. The vote was in the affirmative. The results of the run off election were announced. Ron Barton will be the fourth new Vestry member. The results of the election for convention delegates were also announced. Rebecca Rodak is the new delegate and Heather Gill is the alternate. It was noted that Committee Reports are included in the booklet given to everyone prior to the meeting. Bruce announced that we will bid the Bresnahans a fond farewell but not willingly. Father Paul Thanked Cindy for being a wonderful companion in the journey of life and for her work with the acolytes of St. Mark s. Marilyn Ford has agreed to take over Cindy s acolyte job. Father Paul thanked everyone again for eleven wonderful years. We closed the meeting with the singing of the Doxology. The meeting was adjourned at 7:05 PM. Respectfully Submitted, Betty Evans, Secretary Worship Committees: Acolytes - Marilyn Ford The acolytes have been doing a wonderful job this year. We are fewer in number due to kids going off to college, etc. But, we have recently gained a new, and very eager member - Emma Taylor. Emma will beginserving on Sunday, Dec. 2nd, as torch. All Acolytes at St. Mark's take pride in serving. We can all be proud of them. Music Department Kristin Jacobs The Choir has enjoyed another year of fellowship and music. I want to thank all the members of the choir for their dedication and participation in this important ministry. I m especially thankful for the choir s participation in my recent wedding. Mark and I had so many compliments from people who attended the wedding on how wonderful the choir sounded and how neat it was for a choir to sing at a wedding. We are now preparing for the upcoming Advent and Christmas season. Anyone who enjoys singing is welcome to join us. We rehearse on Thursday evenings at 7:30. Altar Guild - Sandra Elkins The Altar Guild is the ministry of preparing and maintaining the various supplies (vessels, vestments, linens and hangings, banners, candles, charcoal and incense) used at the altar. Members are trained and assigned to a one-week period, during which she/he is responsible for the services during the week. We presently have 6 members. Anyone interested in learning more about the Altar Guild should contact one of the members. Little Church - Hollie Mitchell This has been a banner year for the historic church. All of the stained glass windows have been restored and covered for protection as well as beauty. A Wednesday evening service has been added to the church services. An All Children s service was a huge success. The young people of St. mark s conducted a full Eucharist service from start to finish. The collection was given in the name of the children for the window restoration. Sue Miles has entered into the Altar Guild of the little church and Rachel Taylor is in training for the jr. Altar Guild. Lay Readers Thankfully there are those willing to assist the clergy of St. Mark s in the reading of scripture, the Creed and The Prayers of the People. Our current cadre of lay readers/lectors/chalicers is; John Bowyer Marilyn Ford Betty Evans Alan Rezek Allan McVey David Hurlbut Monica Miller Chuck Riffee Steve Hanley Heather Gill Gene Zdrojewski ECW Annual Report - Gail Byrd This year has been a very successful busy year for the ECW. The long awaited remodeled lounge kitchen was completed. Following this plans are in the works to redecorate the lounge. Much of the furniture has been sold and the lounge has been painted. This is a work in progress. We hosted several after church lunches as well as providing after church coffee hour supplies. A farewell party was provided for Fr. Paul & Cindy. A reception for the Bishop was provided as well. We provided food and served for 4 funerals and we were pleased to host Kristi Evans wedding reception. We have appointed a wedding coordinator, Ruth Legg to oversee plans for weddings in the future. Donations have been made to the National Cathedral, to the Old Church repair, to Stephen Day and to help with travel for the youth. Under the bed boxes were purchased and donated to the Twin Cities Shelter. We continue to remember our shut in members with cards each month and many of our members make visits. We have had several successful fundraisers: Cat s Meow replicas of the Whole Church and also the Old Church, Trash/Treasure Sale and our annual Bazaar. Pastoral Care - Pat Dewey, Fr. Rodge Fourteen visits were made during November & December of 2006. Seventy-three visits were made from January 2007 through October 2007. St. Theresa s Guild - Pat Williams St. Theresa s guild meets monthly (2nd Monday at 7:30 pm) for fellowship and support. New members are welcome and hostesses are needed for the coming year. Adults Night Out (ADO) - Pat Williams Adult night out s are hosted monthly in host/hostess home and are a non structured event with good food and fellowship. Non alcoholic beverages are requested. We meet on Friday or Saturday evening at 6:30 (date determined by host/hostess). Bring a covered dish to share. All welcome, if you wish to host an ADO please contact Pat Williams, ADO Coordinator 727-4140. Outreach Committees Christ s Kitchen - Mary McCoy Report from Christ's Kitchen. The number of people eating at Christ's Kitchen has doubled in the past year. The total average has been approximately l300 people each month. Numbers used to be lower in the beginning of each month, but are now up in the 70s and 80s.....Nov. 5 we had a record 94 for the first week of the month. We continue to be blessed with help from several people. The Balderson's of St. Paul's United Methodist Church continue to buy us whatever we need every two weeks. This includes all of the hamburger we want. Mr. and Mrs. Sparks call once a month to get a list of our needs. These two couples alone have literallysaved us. They truly believe this is what Jesus wants us to do....feed the poor. Even with all of this help, we still run low on some of our staples. The government has not called with any food donations. So, we are now depending totally on donations from churches and individuals. But, as I said before, we are truly blessed.....we always have enough food for everyone to have "seconds". The wonderful people that eat in Christ's Kitchen have become my family, and I am honored to have the opportunity to serve them. Food Pantry - Erika Bonnett Time flies when you are having fun. - I thoroughly enjoy my work at the food pantry. As you already know, the food pantry is open Tuesday and Thursday morning. The hours have changed a little, we open 30 minutes earlier and are now open from 9:30 until 11am. Especially during the second half of the month when it is very busy this is helpful in shortening the wait for people. In October we broke an all-time record, we assisted 94 families. It remains to be seen if this increase is a one-time occurrence or will continue. We have served an average of 72 families during the first 10 month of the year. I admit, when the shelves empty as quickly as they do, at times I feel like closing my eyes and hope for the best. So far we have been blessed. Sadly I must report that we cannot rely on monthly USDA food deliveries any more. If we are lucky we receive a delivery every second month, it has happened that we had to wait longer. Becoming a member of Mission WV in December 2006 proved to be a great blessing. Granted during 2007 we were only able to pick up a load three times in Huntington, but each time we have received a BIG load of desirable items, and totally free of charge. We were expecting to receive another load during Thanksgiving week, but due to the fact that their warehouse is just about bare, we will have to do without it. We were encouraged to call in January to see if the situation has improved& Since April the food pantry is also a member of Believe in WV , which is in Cross Lanes. It is a smaller version of Mission WV, after a membership fee everything is free of charge. They do not specifically deal in food items, but I visited the warehouse twice and we have benefited each time. Yet at the moment this warehouse is running on empty as well. Various churches are very supportive. The number has increased!!! I do not want to mention any by name fearing that I might leave one off the list. The same goes for various organizations from the St. Albans Community, at times I have been rendered speechless witnessing the outpouring. Without your and their support combined, the food pantry would not be able to fulfill its mission assisting families in need with a 5 to 7 day food supply. Yet, things seem to become desperate around this time of year, many other programs are operating during the Holiday Season and with many donations going temporarily to these worthwhile causes, our shelves stay a bit empty. Last year it was the same. With this in mind I applied for the food pantry to become a member of the Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway. After attending a class, we were granted membership in August. Here we can order items from their inventory (which is of course limited). We pay only pennies on the dollar. Mid-November I will pick up our first order in Kanawha City. This is how things stand at the food pantry. I thank you for your support and wish you a very blessed Christmas and a happy New Year. Financial Assistance (Rector s Discretionary Fund) The rector s discretionary fund has been very active this year with many people being helped. The amount of money coming into the fund has also increased thanks to the donation of the loose offering each Sunday. Christian Education Committees Children s Sunday School - Heather Gill We have had a very exciting year so far that includes lots of fun projects and activities. Each Sunday we meet at 9:15 in the Children s Chapel. After our lesson we all gather in the classroom for a snack and craft. We typically have somewhere between five and ten students each week. With help from Donna and many different catalogues I chose a new curriculum that is much like the Godly Play we used in the past. It is called Let the Children Come . The students and I have started at the beginning and worked out way through the basics. They have enjoyed learning about the creation, Adam, Eve, the snake, Noah and his ark, baby Moses, the Ten commandments, and recently , the plagues and Israelites. Or as one of my scholars said, the blood and the bugs! Though our number may be small we still have a good time and the kids are inquisitive and ready to learn. We are looking into having another children s service and have been asked to decorate the little church with some festive creations (be on the lookout). I would like to extend an invitation to anyone who is interested in possibly teaching a Sunday or two and invite all to come and participate! God Bless! Adult Sunday School Class - Chuck Riffee This year the Adult Sunday School class has been studying passages each week from the Old Testament, the Epistles, Gospels and the Psalms from Lectionary Year C. We start Lectionary year A in December. Some of the benefits of following the lectionary are: we can study and prepare in depth to consider the priest s homily or sermon at the church service; there is little repetition, and we can cover the range of the Holy Scripture over a three year period; and you ll be in sync if you are away and visiting other churches using the lectionary. Each week the lesson is emailed to class members, or mailed, if someone does not have access to a computer or email. The lessons usually contain two or three homilies, or sermons, which are about the scripture, and which help focus our discussion to relate God s word to our every day lives, and to our call to live as Christ dwells within us. We have a lot of fun in our class, and lively discussion! We invite you to join us each Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m., across from the lounge. If you would like to have the material emailed to you, even if you can t attend, please send me an email at criffee2@verizon.net. Call me if you would like to know more about class at 727-9496. We would love to have you join us. Web site - Rebecca Rodak The web page is being updated with Microsoft Expression. Due to glitches in various HTML editors, some links are not working and have been removed. The web page is current in regards to the calendar, schedule and Ivy Vine. If anyone becomes aware of outdated information on the web page, it is very important that you notify me at RSRodak@suddenlink.net. Library - Rebecca Rodak The library is very near the end of its initial stage of development. In a nutshell, the Anglican Shoppe and other non-pertinent materials have been moved from the library, all of the library's materials have been moved into the library from the women's choir dressing room, and the processed books have all been catalogued. Library rules and an Acquisition and Retention Policy have been written and published. I have joined the National Church Library Association and keep a notebook of its materials for reference. Current projects include the placing the shelf tags and then moving the books to their proper place. Projects for the future include publicizing the library once it is ready for heavy use, processing and cataloguing the last of the backlogged donations, which is around a dozen boxes, and developing library programs. Phase Twowill also include the collection of overdue books so that they can be catalogued and the very selective acquisition of new books. Themost significant obstacle that the library faces is the storage of other groups' objects in its space. This is extremely disruptive, particularly when stacks of sorted material are moved from the library work table. Brenda Beatty and Rachel Taylor have volunteered to work in the library. Ivery much look forward toworking with them and hearing their good ideas! EYF - Alan Rezek Following is a list of activities which the youth undertook during the past year. In addition, the St Albans community of churches worked together, each sponsoring an activity on a monthly rotation. September 2006 sponsored an SAYN (St Albans Youth Network) activity shot a video. October Halloween Party for kids November - Went to Mosque for Ramadan Set up angel tree December - Set up Angel Tree Helped with food baskets January 07 - Youth/Parents Olympics February - Ski Trip Fat Tuesday Pancake diner March - SAYN activity bowling Peanut Butter eggs April - Easter egg hunt for kids May - Mothers Day breakfast Youth Sunday July - Cedar Point Trip October 07 - Went to Mosque for Ramadan Halloween Party for kids Rock climbing Other Parish Committees The Anglican Shoppe - Hollie Mitchell This year the Anglican Shoppe has mad a slight profit. Come visit and bring your friends. Memorial Fund Committee - Sue Moss The Memorial Fund Committee has had a relatively slow year in the number of projects undertaken, but a door-buster of a project in August was successful in every aspect. The Old Church windows were repaired and new protective covering installed. This required some fundraising to which the congregation, former members, and friends responded in their usual generous manner. The project was completed August 11, 2007. We are currently looking for a calligrapher who can prepare the list of donors to be displayed in the anti-room of the Old Church. Thanks to all who participated in any way to this project. Coffee Hour - Ann Hall I go so Sam's and buy the coffee for Coffee Hour. Lately some "goodies" have been furnished by some Saints of St. Marks. Altar Flowers - Donna Taylor The Altar flowers are being purchased and arranged by Hollie Mitchell, Donna Taylor & Nancy Tonkin. We welcome fresh flowers from members gardens especially during the summer months. If you would like to have flowers placed on the Altar in memory of a loved one or in thanksgiving to the Glory of God please call the office we have several open dates or you can share a Sunday. Stewardship Sets of envelopes issued for 2007 93 Landscape Committee/Garden Club - Ken Eastwood This past year has seen an increase of Church members maintaining various gardens around St Mark s Church. Thanks to St Mark s garden club for purchasing plants for Vivian Persinger s garden. Ann Mills has increased her activity by maintaining a garden near the exit lane from the Church. Liz Keene and Ditty Reed cleaned up the garden at the rental property. The landscape committee says thanks to all who are committed to improving the appearance of Church property. Thanks to Ron Barton for maintaining the Memorial garden. Moss, Senior Warden and Search Committee Chairman Thank each of you for your prayers and support to our church during this time of transition. Your continued attendance and financial support has allowed us to accomplish much of our stated goals from 2006. However, the most wonderful part is the ongoing actions of all that volunteer their time as well as their talents. The outstanding job done by the junior warden with all the additional work that has been placed on him, his group of talented handymen and women who have helped him, the ECW and all of the work that they have done from the renovation of the lounge to the planning of many social functions at the church, to Donna our church secretary who fields many of the questions and problems that arise day to day, to the many ministries that are conducted from the various areas of the church, i.e. Christ s Kitchen, the food pantry, Christmas baskets, the needs assistance fund, the music program (both senior choir, and the children s choir), the visitation program, the treasurer and the financial reports provided, and to all the others who pray, mow, pound, serve, plan, execute, laugh, paint, clean, support and care for the many hurting or in need, for each and every one of you I am truly thankful. Yes, we need more members and more giving. Our financial guideline is entirely FAITH based; our church depends on each of us prayerfully considering our level of giving and what God would have us do. Every expenditure is carefully considered before any monies are spent or obligated. Some expenses we can control, but many we must have to keep the lights on, the furnace or air conditioning running, and the other utilities we need to keep to the doors open. As prices continue to rise, so also must our level of giving. Please consider what God asks each of us to share with Him. One of the most effective ways that a church grows is by members inviting someone to attend with them. If you can do this, we can grow the church and the opportunities we have to serve Him and His church. Especially, my thanks and appreciation go to the members of the Vestry and the Search committee for their support and hard work. To all those who took the time to answer the church survey, thank you. Each of your answers and comments has been carefully considered in the preparation of our church profile. That profile should be completed very soon and published. After that we will begin to receive names of priests who are possible candidates for the position of Rector of St. Mark s. This is not a simple or quick process, but an introspective and ongoing discernment for both priests and congregations. Please continue to keep the process in your prayers as we ask to be guided by the Holy Spirit speaking to the members of the search committee, through you the members of His church. Again, thank you for your prayers and support. Jr. Warden s Annual Report 2007 From: Jr. Warden, Jim Reed In the beginning of 2007, the ECW voted to remodel the kitchen in the lounge. Some items in this project were paid for by the ECW and some items were paid for by the church. This work was done by Mike Lett Builders. The work was completed in March. The cabinets were donated by Bruce and Sue Moss. All other materials were purchased on an as needed basis. The kitchen looks very nice. There was other on going maintenance projects spread out throughout the year. The two major ones were replacement of the lights in the lounge and redoing the church rectory. During the year we have had a couple of work parties to clean the church facility. These parties were very successful. I would like to have another work party before Christmas. The church rectory project was both time consuming and extensive. The house was gone through from one end to the other and from basement to the roof. Carpet was replaced in the basement rec. room area. A new ceiling was also installed in that same room. The walls were painted after the roof was replaced. All attic storage areas were cleaned, all bedrooms were repainted by Ken Eastwood, John Duckworth and Ron Barton. I don t know what I would have done without them. We had two or three work parties at the rectory. Each one was very successful. The first work party addressed landscaping work as well as work inside the house. We did general cleaning and painted trim work such as baseboards and window and door molding. The second work party addressed mostly painting inside. The third work party addressed painting outside areas such as soffits , garage doors, etc. Each work party was well attended and very successful I would like to thank as many people as I can remember. Ron Barton, John Duckworth, Ken Eastwood, Liz Keene, Sam Owens, Bruce Moss, Doug Holliday, Phil Day, David Hurlbut, Walt Mitchell, and Ditty Reed for not only helping with the work but for making our lunch. The work is now completed and we have moved on to other projects such as the Bethany House and the heating system in the old church. During the year we were fortunate to have Hollie Mitchell head up the research on the stained glass windows. The windows were repaired and the protective coverings were replaced with appropriate material to preserve their beauty and to make them last longer. The grounds at St. Mark s, as well as the church cemetery were kept up very nicely all summer by Ron Barton, Ken Eastwood, John Duckworth and Sam Owens. My thanks and appreciation goes out to this group of men. They not only mowed the grass but also maintained the equipment. I would also like to thank Liz Keene and Anne Mills for their help in landscaping the church property. In the beginning of the year, the church signed an agreement with H.E. Neuman Co. (a heating and cooling maintenance company) to maintain our 16 heating and cooling units. They also monitor the Bethany House and the apartments. The money we have saved by hiring the Neuman Company has more than paid their annual fee. The apartments have been repaired as needed. Plumbing has been repaired and a hot water heater has been replaced. The work at the church is on going and could not be done without the faithful volunteers that some how show up when needed. Thank the Lord for these people and for His looking out over us as we try to do His work in His house. Pp1TSH &,28>DJ q1TSH@bn(N^ "$ ,9"D "H "0( ""$
