An inexpensive room in Hawaii? Is that an oxymoron? Or a great half day adventure around Hawaii’s famous volcano for $60? Although costs in Hawaii are unusually high for the U.S.A. – there are “deals” on rooms, tours, hikes, boat trips, flights, etc. – where the price is unusually low and the quality is very high for that price. I have been coming to the Big Island’s volcano region for over 30 years… and below are the secret values usually only locals know.

In fact, The Big Island, also called Hawaii Island, is especially known for having some of the best priced items within the state of Hawaii. Locals pride themselves on the spirit of Aloha and providing an above average product or service.

Let’s start with the charming little village itself, called Volcano, Hawaii. It is just outside the Volcanoes National Park boundary (officially called Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, or H.V.N.P.). Just going to this village and cruising around is a treat. The almost surreal native greenery, supplemented by a myriad of flowers of all colors, make this place a feast for the eyes.

In the heart of the village is Volcano Inn – a beautiful lodge built during the 1980′s, and set in the rain-forest of this romantic place. This establishment paradoxically also has prices that are unusually low. The amenities, cleanliness, and natural beauty is unsurpassed – yet the prices are as low as $69/room for a standard room staying 3 or more consecutive nights. For a deluxe room, the prices start as low as $90/night for 3 or more consecutive nights. Make sure you stay at the actual lodge called Volcano Inn, as there are now copy cat lodges that have utilized this proprietor’s popularity (since 1988). They sometimes charge much more for less quality. Don’t be fooled by alterations of this name (e.g., Inn at Volcano, Inn of Volcano) unless you want to miss out on the very best lodging deal on the island.

Qantas Grounds More Aircraft & Cancels Further Flights

Qantas Airways announced today that it is going to ground two more aircraft in response to the continuing industrial action from the Australian Licenced Engineers Association (ALAEA) that has created a backlog of maintenance on the Qantas fleet.

The grounding of these two airplanes will mean the cancellation of 80 domestic flights over the period of next month. This implies that some 20,000 seats will be reduced from the airline’s capacity. The development is expected to impact flight operations between the eastern states and Perth.

As a direct consequence of the ongoing ALAEA ban on overtime and work to rule, Australia’s flag carrier has been obligated to ground seven aircraft, cancel approximately 500 flights and take away some 88,000 seats from sale over the next month.

Since the industrial action has been initiated by the ALAEA and the Transport Workers’ Union in September, it is reported that 60,000 passengers have been affected as a result of 129 flights getting cancelled and 321 flights delayed.

Alan Joyce, Qantas Chief Executive Officer, said the backlog of maintenance is the result of the continued union action. “The ongoing action from the licensed aircraft maintenance engineers’ union means we do not have the manpower to fulfil all of the necessary maintenance on our fleet of aircraft,” Mr Joyce was quoted in the company’s press release.

“The industrial action has caused a shortfall of more than 60,000 man hours of maintenance and this is increasing on a daily basis, forcing us to ground aircraft.seattle car rental

“If this overtime ban continues, we will be grounding even more aircraft. This is not a safety concern as problems are addressed before planes fly. But it is causing ongoing and unplanned disruption to our customers.

“This is impacting our passengers’ holiday and business travel plans and it is impacting on the tourism industry,” Mr Joyce added.

Mr Joyce also questioned the union’s claims that these planes were due for disposal all along.

“These aircraft are flying this week and from Monday they won’t be. When we clear the backlog of maintenance then the aircraft will be put back into service. It’s as simple as that,” he said.

Qantas’ Airfare to Soar?

With holiday season approaching fast, it remains to be seen that whether the airline and the unions are able to sort out their issues. This, however, seems most unlikely considering ALAEA’s notification that it will keep the ban on overtime and the ‘go-slow’ in place until Christmas. For travellers who wish to place their hands around cheap flight tickets with Qantas, it indeed is a tricky situation. Aircraft are getting grounded, flights are getting cancelled and seats are getting reduced – cheap flight tickets with Qantas are not something that will be easily available in the current scenario!

Travellers would surely be hoping that better sense prevails and average passenger is saved the trouble.
